They have to generate suspense by using mystery and elements of surprise, which means that there must be something about the situation and the plot that is unusual and out of the ordinary. But they can't go too far in this direction, or a credibility problem sets in that, if taken too far, can de- rail the entire thing. Signpost doesn't actually get de- railed, but the screenplay comes dangerously close. Fortunately, Signpost has a strong cast, with Stuart Whitman giving an intriguing and involving performance that strongly anchors the film. Joanne Woodward doesn't get the opportunity to display the range of which she is capable, but she adds spark and commitment to the proceedings, and Edward Mulhare makes the most of the role of the doctor. There's also an old mill setting that is quite striking, dominating the picture at one point. Signpost to Murder is an average little thriller, but one that fans of the genre will want to seek out because of its obscurity and its cast.
